Thursday: Unless God is our Rest

Thursday, June 30, 2011

Thursdays theme was Unless God is our Rest.
The devotion included the verses Psalm 46:1-3.

Psalm 46:1-3
1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

The devotion started off with sharing a time where I was incredibly tired- the first story that I came up with was a point on Tuesday afternoon when I was working on the roof and was very tired and a little bit frustrated.
We talked about how exhausted everyone felt at that point of the week due to long hours working and too few hours of sleeping.
Rest is very important to our lives.
But sometimes restless situations can take our rest from us.
That is when we especially need to trust God to supply our rest.
No matter what the situation, the trouble, the fatigue - God can and will supply rest.
Something that was definitely important to know especially at a point when we were all feeling fatigued.
God will supply our rest.

Psalm 127:1
Unless the Lord builds the house,
its builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchmen stand guard in vain.

Wednesday: Unless God is our Provision

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Wednesday's Devotion used the passage Psalm 23.

Psalm 23 (NIV)
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.

Unless God is our Provision.
Wednesday's devotion definitely linked with Wednesday.
Our crew chief, Lupo, was taking off the tarps (by himself) that we had put on the roof Monday afternoon. Lupo went a little bit earlier to start on that and the rest of us had just gotten to the worksite when... He slipped on the couple lengths of 15 pound tar paper that we had put on the roof the previous afternoon.
Lupo fell about 14 feet off the back side of the roof. He landed in a pile of shingles, wood and nails that we had taken off the roof the previous day.
God provided and Lupo only broke his ankle (it could have been a lot worse....).

The devotion talked about how we use different tools and supplies to roof a house. We need provision on the worksite and we also need provision in our personal lives.
God provides all that we need and he takes care of us.
As Psalm 23 says, God is our shepherd and he will take care of us by guiding us and supplying for our needs.
We shall not want because God is our provision.

God provided many things for us that week and specifically on Wednesday.
-He provided by Lupo's injuries only being minor compared to what they could have been.

Lupo at the worksite on Friday (Yup that's me too :) )

-He provided by the fact that we were working with another crew and the Woodchippers' crew chief Mr. Bunyea was able to take over and lead us through the rest of the week.
-He provided by having willing people come from Edwards Road Baptist Church to help us.
-He provided by giving the leaders on our crew the wisdom to know what to do to finish the roof.
-He provided by all of the people working on our crews being willing to do whatever jobs they were asked to do.
-He provided by having adults on our crews who were willing to teach us the skills that we needed.
-He provided by sending other crews (Short Cuts and Level Heads) to come help us finish on Friday.
-He provided by supplying runners who were willing to pick up things like shingles and more tar paper.
-He provided by keeping everyone else safe (and no more falls off the roof :) .
-He provided by giving everyone enough strength and sustaining us through the week.
-He provided by the especially joyful people on our crews who lifted everyone's spirits.
-To be continued as I remember more :)

Tuesday: Unless God is Our Strength

Saturday, June 25, 2011

Tuesday's devotion used the verse Psalm 28:7.

Psalm 28:7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;
my heart trusts in him, and I am helped.
My heart leaps for joy
and I will give thanks to him in song.

The devotional talked about how Unless God is our strength, we will run out of our own strength quite quickly.
Since the devotion was the middle of Tuesday, it was a common feeling to be a bit overwhelmed at the task of roofing a house and to feel tired or frustrated with what we were working on.
The house that we, Patch Jobs, were working on had a roof that was a little bit bigger and steeper and more difficult than usual so we were working with a second crew, Woodchippers.
The main job on Tuesday was tearing up 4 layers of shingles and a layer of Cedar shakes.
If you aren't familiar with cedar shakes, they are wooden shingles.
We had to tear off the four layers of shingles, the cedar shakes and some wooden strips that were running across the roof horizontally.
We were working on tearing the roof down to the rafters, in order to build it back up.

By lunch time, after working from about 7 am until about 11:30 am, everyone was getting tired.
We could all use a reminder that God will be our strength if we ask him.
And God was our strength that week.
I can't tell you how many times I stopped to ask God to be my strength and he was there when I needed him.

World Changers - Unless

Hi everyone!
I know its been quite awhile since I've posted.... I could tell you a million excuses but.... I won't :)
I just wanted to post a little bit about a missions trip that Chelsie and I went on with some friends from Westmont Baptist Church.
We went on a World Changers missions trip ( www.world-changers.net ) down to Greenville, SC.
You Can check out this blog - http://blogs.world-changers.net/category/2011/greenville-sc-june-13-18-2011/ for the official World Changers blog of that week. I was on the Patch Jobs crew and Chelsie was on the Level Heads.

This was such an unforgettable experience that I had and I am looking forward to next year's World Changers trip already :)
This year I had the privilege of being the Patch Jobs devotion leader.
The devotions that the World Changers staff prepared (they had the devotions laid out to go along with the theme) and I was struck by how powerful they were because they fit perfectly with everyday as though someone had looked at our day and then wrote a devotional for us to do.
I am going to try to do a post for each day talking about the devotional and how it fit with our day.
